Link preview checker

Paste a link and see the card it makes in iMessage, X, Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack, with a list of the tags that are missing or wrong.

We read the page's tags the way messaging apps do. Nothing is saved.

Where previews come from

When you paste a link into a message or a post, the app visits the page and reads a few tags from its HTML:

  • og:title and og:description, the words on the card. Apps fall back to the page title and meta description.
  • og:image, the picture. 1200 x 630 pixels works everywhere.
  • twitter:card, which tells X to show the big picture (summary_large_image) instead of a small square.
  • og:url or a canonical link, so shares with different tracking tags count as one page.

The checker reads the same tags, opens the image to make sure it loads, and draws each app's card from them.

Common problems and fixes

  • No picture. There is no og:image, or it points at a file that 404s. Add a 1200 x 630 image and use its full https address.
  • The wrong picture. The app cached an old preview. Change the image's file name; most apps fetch a new address fresh.
  • Small square on X. Add twitter:card set to summary_large_image.
  • Title cut off. Keep it under about 60 characters.
  • Blocked. Some sites turn automated visits away, and so get no preview anywhere. If the checker cannot read your page, the apps probably cannot either.

Tagging the link with UTM tags? The preview stays the same, as long as the page sets og:url.

Your bio link gets pasted into DMs and group chats more than any other link you have. A page with your name as the title and your photo as the image looks like you; a page titled "Linktree" with a generic logo looks like spam. Every makerhandle page makes its own share image from your photo and projects. Run your current page through the link in bio grader to see how it scores overall.

Questions

What is an Open Graph tag?

A meta tag in a page's HTML, like og:title or og:image, that tells apps what to show when the page is shared. Facebook created the format; almost every app reads it now.

What size should og:image be?

1200 x 630 pixels, under about 5 MB, as PNG or JPG. That ratio shows well in every app.

Why does the app still show an old preview?

Apps cache previews, sometimes for days. Changing the image file name usually forces a fresh one. Facebook and LinkedIn also have their own tools to refresh a preview.

Is the preview exactly what each app shows?

It is close: same fields, same layout. Each app changes its design now and then, and some crop images slightly differently.
