"Free website with your own domain" is one of the most searched and most misleading phrases in web building. Here is what is genuinely free, what only looks free, and the cheapest honest paths.

## The domain itself is never free

Let us get this out of the way: a domain name like yourname.com costs money every year, usually $10 to $20 for a .com, from a registrar. Offers of a "free domain" from website builders typically mean the **first year** is included with a paid plan, and you pay the normal price after.

So the real question is: can you **connect** a domain you pay for to a free website?

## What is genuinely free

- **Static hosting**: GitHub Pages and Cloudflare Pages host static sites for free, with custom domains and HTTPS. You need to write the site yourself, in HTML or with a static site generator.
- **Some link in bio tools**: a few offer a custom domain on a free tier. Check the fine print on branding, limits and how long the offer has existed.

## What looks free but is not

- **Website builders' free plans** usually run on their own subdomain, often with ads or a badge. Wix's free plan, for example, shows Wix ads and does not allow a custom domain.
- **"Free domain" offers** are usually a first year bundled with a paid plan.
- **Trials** end. Moving your domain later is a chore you do not need.

## The cheapest honest options

If you do not code, the cheapest ways to put a real page on your own domain in 2026 are tiny yearly plans:

- **Carrd Pro Standard**, $19 a year, for one-page sites you design yourself.
- **makerhandle Pro**, $20 a year, for a ready-made maker page with projects, analytics and a subscribe box.

Both are less than two months of a typical website builder. Check current prices on each site.

## What makerhandle includes for free, and for $20

The **free plan** is free forever: five projects, three templates, up to 100 email subscribers, seven days of analytics and a small badge, at makerhandle.com/yourname.

**Pro, $20 a year**, adds your custom domain with automatic SSL, unlimited projects, all seven templates, the theme builder, a year of analytics and no badge. It hosts your makerhandle page on your domain; it is not general hosting for other sites. See [a personal website for $20 a year](https://makerhandle.com/for/personal-website).

You can also earn Pro for free: every friend who joins through your invite link and adds a project gets you both a month, up to a year. See [the referral program](https://makerhandle.com/features/referral-program).

## How to decide

- You write code: use free static hosting and pay only for the domain.
- You want a full site with many pages: pay for a website builder.
- You want one good page on your own domain with no upkeep: pay about $20 a year.

Whatever you pick, own the domain. It is the one part of your online presence that moves with you. Read [how to host a personal website for $20 a year](https://makerhandle.com/blog/host-personal-website-for-20-a-year).
