# How to Change the Link in Your Instagram Bio (and Everywhere Else)

> Change the link in your Instagram bio in a minute, then find every other place your old link in bio lives, from story highlights to email footers.

Changing the link in your Instagram bio takes a minute. Finding every other place the old link lives takes longer, and it is the part that decides whether people still find you. This guide does both, in order of how many people each place reaches.

It was written for people leaving Tap Bio, whose own page says its service continues until Oct 31, 2026, but the steps are the same whatever you are moving from.

## Before you start: have the new link ready

Swap the link only once the new page is finished, so nobody lands on something half built. Leaving Tap Bio? [Import your page](https://makerhandle.com/import) in one click and your links come over in order.

Tip: add a tag to the version you put on Instagram, for example makerhandle.com/yourname?ref=ig. Your stats then show Instagram by name as the source, which is how you will know the swap worked. Our [UTM guide](https://makerhandle.com/blog/track-link-in-bio-clicks-utm) explains tags, and the free [UTM builder](https://makerhandle.com/tools/utm-builder) writes them for you.

## Change the link in your Instagram bio

Since 2023 every Instagram account can show up to five links. To change one:

1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile.
2. Tap **Edit profile**, then **Links**.
3. Tap the old link, replace the address, and save. To start over, remove it and choose **Add external link**.
4. If you have more than one link, drag your main page to the top. On your profile, people see the first link with a note that there are more; the rest take a tap.

Instagram moves menus from time to time, so if the labels differ, look for links under Edit profile. Then check it: open your profile while logged out, or from a friend's phone, and tap the link.

Do not forget **story highlights** and **pinned posts** that say "link in bio" next to an old screenshot, and **link stickers** in stories you have saved to highlights. Those keep pointing at the old address until you replace them.

## Every other profile

The old address is probably on more profiles than you remember. Most keep it under **Edit profile**, in a field called Website or Links:

- TikTok, X, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest profiles
- your YouTube channel's links, and the description of any video that mentions it
- LinkedIn: your contact info and the Featured section
- Facebook page, Twitch, Etsy shop, Substack and any marketplace profile
- Linktree, Beacons or other pages you made in the past and forgot about

## Places that are not profiles

These reach fewer people each, but they last for years:

- **Your email signature**, on every device you send from
- **Newsletter templates**: the footer, the welcome email and any automated sequence
- **Podcast show notes** and the "about" text in your podcast app listing
- **Your website** header, footer and about page
- **Documents**: media kit, press kit, pitch deck, resume, PDF downloads
- **Print**: business cards, packaging inserts, flyers, QR codes. Fix them in the files now so the next print run is right.

A quick way to catch the rest: search your email, notes and cloud drive for the old address. Search for "tap.bio".

## When you cannot edit the old link

Some copies you will never reach: other people's posts, old podcast episodes, comments. The usual fix is to make the old address forward to the new one. That works when you control the old address, for example a Linktree with its redirect feature, or your own domain. It does not work for an address on a service that has closed, which is why Tap Bio users should swap their links before October 31.

## Make it the last time

The reason this is painful is that the address belonged to someone else. Put your link in bio on **a domain you own**, like links.yourname.com, and the next move is one DNS record: every link you ever shared keeps working. makerhandle Pro includes a custom domain with SSL for $20 a year; [custom domain for your link in bio](https://makerhandle.com/blog/custom-domain-link-in-bio) shows how it works with any tool.
